Also, it's cool that he's bisexual and nobody seems to draw attention to this fact, which is surprising.
Well I went into the game absolutely hating him because of the Kaede twist, but I was surprised by his proactive nature (going after the mastermind from the beginning was pretty goddamn exciting), Megumi Hayashibara phenomenal AS HECK voice acting made some of the later scenes all that more impactful, and being able to play as the "Ultimate Detective" made for a nice change of pace, compared to 1 and 2 where you had to rely on smarter people to get through trials (though even he has his dumbass moments from time to time). Definitely one of V3's stronger characters. That said, he's pretty much your definition of a "your mileage may vary" type of character and I think Chapter 5 really hurts him as a character. He keeps the game from being stale at points and manipulates the trials into going in interesting directions. People like Kokichi because he's entertaining and proactive.
